About Sherry Boschert, blog, & book

I’m Sherry Boschert, blogging in conjunction with my second book, 37 Words: Title IX and Fifty Years of Fighting Sex Discrimination (The New Press, April 12, 2022). It’s  a sweeping history of Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education.

Half a century of legal battles and social backlash revolve around a law that girls and women wield to demand fairness in education — a law called Title IX. 37 Words is the first book to tell the complete history of Title IX through the gutsy people behind it, from women denied jobs at the law’s beginnings to students struggling against sexual assault today. Their intersecting narratives offer a timeless playbook for anyone who is horrified by current attacks on women’s rights and is wondering what to do about them.

The 37 words: Here are Title IX’s initial 37 words, after which the book and this blog are named:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance…” – Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

Books: My first book, Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars That Will Recharge America (New Society Publishers, 2006) sold more than 10,500 copies in two printings. One enthusiastic reader sent a copy to every member of the U.S. Congress! The year it appeared, you couldn’t buy an electric car in the United States. Today, more than 1.7 million plug-in cars have been sold in the United States and many more worldwide. For more on that topic, head on over to the non-profit organization that I co-founded, Plug In America.

Testimonials for Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars That Will Recharge America

This is an important book. As a historian I was intrigued by the history; as a reader I was charmed by the writing; as a citizen I was outraged by the auto industry’s duplicity. If you think your car should get a few more MPG (like 30 more!), plug into Plug-in Hybrids. It will recharge your political batteries. — Martin  Sherwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning co-author of American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer

An informative, provocative, engaging book about a vital topic, Plug-in Hybrids is an important book for the 21st century. — Ocean Robbins, founder and director, Youth for Environmental Sanity (YES)

Sherry Boschert does a great job of showing how shifting to hybrid plug-in cars can sharply reduce gasoline use, dependence on imported oil, and carbon emissions. — Lester R. Brown, president, Earth Policy Institute, and author of Plan B  2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble

Plug-in Hybrids is a must-read. If you are concerned about the environment, national security, or high gas prices, there is a solution and it’s contained in this book. — Alexandra Paul, actress and EV driver
