Talking about Title IX in Iowa

I’ll be talking about Title IX and the last half-century of fighting sex discrimination in education at Iowa State University on Tuesday, February 7. The event is free, and you’re invited! If you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa, meet me in the Durham Great Hall of the Memorial Union at 7 p.m. Afterward, I’ll be signing books in the South Ballroom.

The kind folks at Iowa State named me the 2023 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics. I’m the 35th woman to receive this honor, named after the first woman to chair the Republican National Committee. In recognition of this, I’ll be including some history that I usually don’t cover in my talks, like the contributions of Republican women in the days when Title IX was just a gleam in feminists’ eyes. This should be fun!

Returning to the issue of whether payments for the use of a student athlete’s name, image, or likeness is discriminatory if the money flows predominantly to men, a letter from the Office for Civil Rights from roughly a decade ago suggests that any school assisting an outside organization engaging in such lopsided payments could be violating Title IX. If you want to learn more about this issue, there’s a free Webinar offered by The Drake Group on Thursday, February 16 at 2 p.m. ET.

The Weekly Education newsletter from Politico summarized the conservative juggernaut that is attacking the rights of transgender kids, and it ain’t pretty — 315 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures last year, 80% of which tried to restrict transgender students.

Around 100 students walked out of a class in protest of a Harvard University professor being allowed to return to teaching after being on leave for a year for sexual harassment and unprofessional conduct. An audit found multiple deficiencies in the way that the University of California, Los Angeles handles complaints of discrimination. The Punxsutawney (Penn.) School Board charged a high school co-principal with sexual harassment. A senior student sued Haverford (Penn.) College for not helping him when, he said, a rumor spread that he had raped another student.

The Office for Civil Rights resolved an investigation of Troy (Ala.) University discriminating against a pregnant student by requiring the university to take multiple actions to repair damage to the woman’s education and avoid future Title IX violations. Northwood University, Midland, Mich. agreed to open formerly women-only scholarships to male applicants in order to settle an Office for Civil Rights investigation.
